NOTEBOOK 02 — BELIEFS

NOTEBOOK 02 — BELIEFS

Do you have beliefs, or do they have you?

In this second volume of the Notebooks — Question. Investigate. Connect. series, Vanessa Susin de Souza investigates how beliefs are formed, what functions they perform and what happens when an idea becomes entangled with identity, belonging and the need to protect what we consider true.The investigation also examines how we select evidence, defend convictions and resist information that threatens what already makes sense to us, without reducing beliefs to simple errors that could somehow be eliminated.

  • IN THIS VOLUME

    Beliefs rarely arrive announcing themselves as beliefs. More often, they appear as facts, common sense, experience or simply “the way things are”.

    This volume investigates what happens between encountering an idea and becoming certain of it.

    Along the way, it explores:

    01 — How beliefs are formed through experience, repetition and interpretation;
    02 — Why familiarity can so easily be mistaken for truth;
    03 — How memory participates in maintaining what we already believe;
    04 — What happens when beliefs become connected to identity and belonging;
    05 — Why contradictory evidence does not always produce doubt;
    06 — How groups can reinforce convictions and make questioning them more difficult;

    07 — What makes changing one’s mind possible without treating every conviction as disposable.
    The aim is not to teach you how to perceive “correctly”, but to make more visible what takes part in the way you interpret what you see.

  • QUESTION. INVESTIGATE. CONNECT.

    The Notebooks — Question. Investigate. Connect. are short investigations into questions that tend to receive answers far too quickly.

    Each volume begins with a specific problem and follows some of its contradictions, implications and connections with other ideas. They are independent texts: you do not need to read a previous volume to understand the next.

    They are not summaries of Conhecimento Negado, nor shortened versions of its chapters. The Notebooks share some territories of investigation with the book, but follow their own questions, paths and arguments.

    Each volume begins with a question.

    The aim is not to close it. It is to make it harder to answer too quickly.

  • FOR THOSE WHO PREFER QUESTIONS TO READY-MADE ANSWERS

    This Notebook was written for readers interested in beliefs, cognition, behaviour, identity and the ways we construct and defend what we consider true. No academic background or previous knowledge is required.

    The language is direct and accessible, but the questions are not simplified in order to produce convenient conclusions.

    It is not self-help. It is not a manual. And it does not promise a technique for eliminating “limiting beliefs”, reprogramming the mind or replacing inconvenient convictions with more attractive ones.

    It investigates something less spectacular and considerably more difficult:

    how do we know when we are examining a belief and when the belief is organising the examination for us?

THE INVESTIGATION DOESN'T END HERE
