... who/what/why ... is/are/will be UN4RT

UN4RT is an independent creative studio founded by two people and run from two perspectives, each with its own distinct form of expression.

we design separately. we think together. we bring together what fits and preserve what must remain different.

on the one hand – ideas and inspiration:

books, essays, articles, research and intellectual curation dedicated to exploring human behaviour, culture, knowledge and the structures that shape our perception of the world.

on the other hand – images and sound:

photography, design and music that transform observation, experience and creation into something you can see, hear, use or take home with you.

we are not trying to merge these two languages into one. they do not have to be the same to belong in the same place.

what unites them is the way in which we observe and create: curiosity over certainty, autonomy over conformity, and a willingness to question what is usually accepted simply because it has always been there.

why UN4RT?

‘unart’ is one of those peculiar words in the german language.

it can mean bad behaviour, disobedience or inappropriate conduct. but it also embodies something that has always fascinated us: the idea of not behaving exactly as expected.

that’s how UN4RT came about.

not as a celebration of resistance for resistance’s sake, nor as a necessity to turn everything into rebellion. questioning a convention does not mean that it is wrong. it simply means that we consider it legitimate to scrutinise it before accepting it.

for us, UN4RT is the freedom to observe, explore, experiment and create, without being bound by the obligation to fit into a single category.

that is why an exploration of human behaviour can co-exist here alongside a photograph. a book alongside a design object. an essay alongside a song.

the media change. curiosity remains.

two UN4RTificial intelligences

there are two people behind UN4RT.

VANESSA focuses on writing, independent research, essays and intellectual curation. her work primarily explores human behaviour, beliefs, perception, identity, culture and the systems involved in shaping our decisions and interpretations.

MARK works with photography, visual design and music, transforming ideas and thoughts into photographs, compositions, objects, songs and standalone products.

we describe ourselves – with the utterly dubious seriousness that this expression deserves – as UN4RTificial intelligences.

for we think both together and separately, are constantly learning, and shape UN4RT precisely within that space where our differences can coexist without having to disappear.
